Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module provides a basic introduction to the ideas of probability and statistics, and how probability can be applied in a number of contexts including statistical inference.

Syllabus:

1. Graphical and numerical summaries of data. 2. Basic counting. 3. Notions of probability - sample spaces, events, combination of events, conditional probability and independence, Bayes Theorem. 4. Discrete random variables, their probability distributions and moments. 5. Continuous random variables, with emphasis on normally distributed variables. 6. Sampling distributions of means and proportions. 7. The Central Limit Theorem.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

A broad foundation in statistics and to build on this foundation so that you have the necessary confidence and statistical skills to visualise and interpret data.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

None

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Developing a working knowledge of the statistical package Minitab. It provides examples of using Minitab and you will be expected to integrate the knowledge and skills learned in the various examples.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Delivery is a hybrid of traditional distance education and online learning together with a number of face-to-face / on-line tutorials. In addition, there are online discussions moderated by a subject matter expert on elements of each module to reinforce the learning and maximise the benefit of the programme for participants.
